When artist Theresa Clowes was commissioned to create a sculptural installation for the lobby of the Dryden, a new residential building in Denver, she continued her long-standing exploration of natural materials and organic forms. The result is Murmuration, a suspended artwork composed of thousands of river-polished driftwood sticks, gathered by hand and arranged to evoke the fluid, collective motion of birds in flight.
To document the making of Murmuration, I followed Theresa through each phase of the project: gathering driftwood from the riverbanks, shaping and preparing the pieces in her studio and wood shop, and carefully assembling the sculpture on site. The footage captures both the physical labor and poetic thinking behind the work—an intimate portrait of a creative process grounded in nature, collaboration, and movement.
To better reflect the layered nature of the project, Theresa chose to break the final piece into two short films: one focused on her conceptual approach and inspiration, and another on the hands-on process of bringing Murmuration to life.
